| Auspicious Wish At this very moment, for the peoples and the nations of the earth, may not even the names disease, famine, war, and suffering be heard. Rather may their moral conduct, merit, wealth, and prosperity increase, and may supreme good fortune and wellbeing always arise for them. |

| I have been lucky enough to have spent my life surrounded by books – my father being a journalist and my mother being a master of English literature, there has never been a room in my house that didn’t have at least a small selection of books in it. I guess it’s because I was brought up this way that I feel so comfortable with the written word. There’s nothing quite as satisfying to me as the smell of an old book, or picking a book off the shelf to find that it’s been scrawled with someone else’s insightful notes in the margins. It’s no wonder I find myself spending whole afternoons in bookshops wondering where the time has disappeared. When I came to Hong Kong I was quite shocked to find that all the larger bookstores wrapped all of their products in plastic – how was I to feel out if I would like what I was about to read? There is only so much you can tell from a blurb. So I began to search for the used bookstores around town, and eventually came across The Book Attic, which has turned out to be quite the oasis in the midst of a crowded city. Whether I go to browse, buy, or chat with Jennifer, I always come out with either good book or a piece of wisdom that I didn’t previously possess. I’ve travelled through picture books and questionable teen fiction, memoirs and cookbooks, plays and essays and classics – but the wonderful thing is, there is always more to discover, more to explore, more to absorb and figure out in the world of literature; and it is due to places like The Book Attic that this journey through words is possible. I am therefore thrilled to be volunteering here and encourage everybody to come and explore the shelves! |
